Washington County, Tennessee,was established in 1777 as Washington County, North Carolina. From 1784 to 1788,it was part of the State of Franklin.

Joseph was sheriff of Washington County, Tennessee from 1800 to 1806. While sheriff, he worked with Judge Andrew Jackson who later became president. He arrested Russell Bean.

East Tennessee is part of Appalachia. At the end of the French and Indian War, colonists began drifting into the area. In 1769, they first settled along the Watauga River. During the Revolution, the Overmountain Men defeated British loyalists at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The State of Franklin was formed in the 1780s, but never admitted to the Union.

James and Agnes moved to Kentucky in 1800. On April 1, 1802 they joined his brother, Isaac, in forming the Clear Fork Baptist Church. James and Agnes quarreled with Isaac in 1822 and were excluded from the church.
They moved to Monroe County and then to Clay County, Tennessee.
They resolved their differences with the Clear Fork Church in 1834 and returned to make their home with their daughter, Sarah, and her husband, John Wood.
Tennessee was admitted to the Union on June 1, 1796. It was initially part of North Carolina.
